Terra Butler – Ahoy Friend

My work walks the line between art and craft. I make mixed media goodness on whatever I can get my hands on- spare wood, windows, mirrors, fabric. I tend towards bright colors, patterns and textures. I use crafting as a starting off point and let it take me where it goes. This year I am excited to bring a collection of hand-coiled bowls and baskets, made with hand torn vintage fabric ribbons. These functional pieces add a bit of color to your space in the form of useful storage. I will have some smaller mixed-media pieces available as well.

Help! AWBU is My First Conference and I’m So Nervous!

New To Blogging Conference Tips

Help! My First Blogging Conference and I’m So Nervous!

AWBU is just a few short weeks away.

You’ve got your ticket. Maybe you’re a planner and you’ve even started packing. Maybe you know one or two other people going to the conference. Maybe not. Maybe you’ve been blogging for a long time, but you are just now beginning to network. Or maybe you’re brand new to blogging and networking.

Wherever you find yourself in the big wide world of blogging, let me just put your mind at ease by telling you that you have chosen a great conference to attend. In my opinion, Arkansas Women Bloggers is the kindest, most gracious group of women bloggers on the planet. If you walk up to one of them and say, “Help! I’m new!” you can be fairly certain that you are going to be taken care of. This is not the high school lunchroom folks. Arkansas Women Bloggers is a happy place and whether you’re looking for tech advice or just someone to sit by at dinner, you are in the right place.

If this is your first conference and you are looking for a little advice before you go, here are a few tips for your first AWBU.

Make some goals.

[Tweet “What are your goals for #AWBU2014? We want to know. See you soon.” @alisonchino]

Are you hoping to meet more bloggers that live near you? Do you want to improve your Pinterest boards? Are you looking to gain new inspiration in your writing?

Writing down what you want to get out of your conference experience will help you make the most of your weekend.

Of course, you might end up having completely different takeaways from AWBU than you planned, but it’s helpful to have a few goals in your head. It will also help you decide which sessions to attend.

If there are four or five specific people you really want to meet, tell them ahead of time on Twitter or Facebook. Then you’ll be more likely to make it happen.

What to pack.

[Tweet “Oh my goodness. Are you already packed? That’s impressive. #AWBU2014 #ARWB” @alisonchino]

Clothes: Everything goes as far as clothes at AWBU. There are lots of blogging conferences where what to wear is a really big deal (Alt Summit comes to mind) but Arkansas Women Bloggers come from all walks of life and every possible blog genre is represented. For certain, there will be some gals who are looking their best, and if getting dressed up is fun to you, then go right ahead. But if clothes are not your thing and you feel more comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt, no one is going to look down their nose at you.

Business Cards: I find it helpful to have a stack of business cards at a conference. If you don’t have any yet, you can order them for fairly reasonable at MOO and they will arrive quickly. Don’t forget to include your social media handles and current email address.

Other things: Also, I always bring a notebook and a pen for scribbling down ideas. Some people use their IPads or phones for this. Bring an extra battery and charger because your phone will wear down faster with all that tweeting and IG-ing. If you throw in a power strip, other gals will thank you for not using up all the outlets.

Be open. Be kind. Be generous.

Remember what I said about Arkansas Women Bloggers being kind and gracious. Well, you have the power to add to or to take away from that truth. Because you ARE an Arkansas Woman Blogger. You are part of what makes this community wonderful, even if you have not yet met anyone.

So come with an open heart. This might sound cheesy, but if you are super nervous and you walk in a room where you don’t know anyone, look for the person who is standing or sitting by themselves. Go introduce yourself. If no one is by themselves, just walk up to a group even if they are mid-conversation and join in.

And when you meet people, really listen to them. Ask questions. Pull out your phone and follow them on Twitter. Use your social media for generosity.

“@deltamoxie is looking PRESH today! #AWBU”

 or

 “I love @bethanystephens’ energy! #AWBU”

is so much more fun than

 “I’m drinking all the wine at #AWBU 2014! #SorryBoutCha”

 or

“I’m having more fun than anyone else here! #NaNaNa #AWBU”

I’m totally kidding but you get the general idea.

We all have the opportunity to add to the richness of this community. Of course you want to network and we each have goals for where we’re going with our blogs and our businesses, but I want to leave the conference feeling like I have blessed and encouraged others as much as being blessed and encouraged myself.

Now I’ve got to go get packing!

See you there!

Shameless Plug: If reading this post made you excited about connecting with other bloggers, I would love for you to come to my session Breathe Deep: Practices for Your Heart, Soul and Mind on Saturday at AWBU, where we will do just that. I will pair you with another blogger and give you both a chance to listen, to dream and to help each other! Also, there will be chocolate.

It’s a Great Day for Angel Food with Great Day Farms

By Great Day Farms Brand Ambassador Heather Disarro of Heather’s Dish

Great-Day-Farms-Logo with frame

Angel food cake is one of those things that’s rarely made but often enjoyed in our house. Fluffy and flavorful with basically zero calories (fine, the calorie part is false…) it’s a cake that is sure to please almost any palate. You can dress it up with whipped frosting and chocolate, dress it down with a scoop of ice cream, or meet it right in the middle, in my favorite way, with a simple creme anglaise and fresh berries.

angelfoodcake2

This summer has been, from my experience and the stories from friends, a very mild one. Just the other day my husband mentioned that we’ve been lucky the past two summers in Arkansas to have relatively mild weather; I told him he better find some wood to knock on because summer isn’t over. Truly though, this summer has been filled with days outside in the warm sunshine, long walks at dusk and sweet baby tan lines. There isn’t a more summer dessert, with the exception of ice cream, than an angel food cake with fresh seasonal berries. Light and sweet and completely satisfying, this is one dessert y’all won’t want to miss!

Presenting Sponsor of #AWBU Announced

Kendal King Group is delighted to serve as the presenting sponsor for the 2014 Arkansas Women Bloggers conference on September 5 – 7.  We can’t wait to see you in Rogers!

The Women Bloggers asks, “That’s great and all, but what on earth does KKG do?”KKG Logo_color

Kendal King Group is a marketing, design and production agency serving the retail and consumer packaged goods (or “CPG”) industry – in other words, we work with hundreds of the Fortune 500 supplier (aka vendor) companies with a home base in northwest Arkansas.  Our clients include the NBA, DreamWorks Animation, Walmart, Garmin, Clorox and Goodyear.  The company was founded in 1987 and our corporate headquarters is in Kansas City, but we have a team in Bentonville as well as a company presence in Guangzhou, China.  We deliver creative marketing solutions through design, point of purchase displays, packaging, retail consulting, promotional licensing and all sorts of other retail-centric programs for our clients.

The Women Bloggers wonders, “So, why would you care about a blogger conference?”

Members of our team as well as a handful of our clients will join you throughout the weekend, and while we know you’ll be there to reconnect with friends old and new and to learn the latest and greatest about the world of blogging and social media, we know that we will learn just as much from interacting with all of you.  In fact, that’s exactly why we’re so excited to participate!  Many of our clients turn to us for communication tactics and innovative ideas, and we know that the #AWBU conference is a hotbed of creativity and opinions.

In fact, we have some incredibly exciting news to share that will be particularly exciting to bloggers and social media mavens, and we wanted all of you to hear it first!  And, as it so happens, one of your longtime members happens to be one of our newest team members, and she assures us that the Arkansas Women Bloggers community – along with your seven (!) sister states – is the go-to source for savvy content crafters.
We’d love to connect with you in the coming weeks on our social media channels.  We know that our work may still not be entirely clear, so we’ll share a little more with you at the conference.  We’ll actually be launching a whole new look and feel for our company during your gathering, and we are really looking forward to hearing your feedback!

If you have questions or want to know a little bit more about KKG, you can reach our new director of strategic marketing – Beth Stephens – on TwitterLinkedIn or email (beth@kendalking.com) if you’re not already connected with her through the Arkansas Women Bloggers community.  We can’t wait to meet all of you!

Shewmaker Center for Global Business
Northwest Arkansas Community College

Registration and Gathering begin at 11:30 at NWACC.

For #AWBU 2014 Foodie Friday, we are channeling the inner farmer in most of us and celebrating the bounty available to all of us locally in Arkansas.  We are very fortunate to have presenters who are tremendous supporters of our Arkansas producers, farmers and crops.  They believe in utilizing the abundant bounty that can be found right here in our home state and demonstrate that belief by  highlighting the use of that abundance in their menus, photographs and work.

Taste Arkansas also believes in promoting our Arkansas farms, farmers and products.  We are grateful to them for supporting Arkansas Women Bloggers in our efforts to further tell the story of Arkansas and its bounty.

We also appreciate Great Day Farms and their sponsorship of one of our presenters, Heather Disarro.

This year we are fortunate to be utilizing the wonderful facilities of the Culinary Classroom, the Peterson Auditorium and the Tyson Kitchen at Northwest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville for our Foodie Friday event.  With the availability of these areas and the excellent technology resources, we just know this is going to be the best one yet.

No, we are not including one of your favorite events from the past two years — the Iron Chef Competition, but I promise you won’t miss it.  These presenters will peak your interest and curiosity while preparing you for the kitchen, the camera and the community.

So grab your gingham and denim, leave the hoes and weeds at home and come celebrate the Abundant Bounty of Arkansas.  Ya’ll don’t want to miss this!

Did I mention that there will be food?  As in nibbles.

AWBU 2014 – Handmade Marketplace

Last year, several of our member bloggers took a leap up faith and agreed to participate in the first ever AWBU Handmade Marketplace.

image

We converted the Camp Ferncliff mess hall into a wonderful marketplace and the girls sold a variety of products from photo cards, handspun yarn, handmade clothing and accessories, signs, upcycled items, soaps, lotions, baked goods and books.

For several of the girls, this was their first experience as a vendor in a handmade event. It was an opportunity to try out the craft fair lifestyle with out a lot of work in a friendly and inviting atmosphere.

We are currently exploring the possibility to continue this event at AWBU 2014. Due to the change in the venue for AWBU 2014, it is necessary for us to gauge the interest in this event before we make a commitment to it.

If you are interested in participating at the AWBU 2014 Handmade Marketplace it is essential that you fill out this form NO LATER THAN July 11th. Based on the responses we receive, we will make a decision and contact all potential vendors by July 18th. A final commitment from all participating vendors will be required by August 8.

It is possible that we could allow outside vendors to particpate in the marketplace. If you know someone who is not a member of ARWB that may be interested please pass along the information and ask them to fill out the form. Priority will be given to current ARWB members and to those that are registered for AWBU 2014.

Please note that this form does NOT guarantee you a space in the AWBU 2014 Handmade Marketplace. In order to make sure that we have a variety of products available, we (ARWB) reserve the right to make the final decision in the selection of vendors.

Please fill out this form no later than July 11th!

It’s Time to Vote for the Best

best_of_ark_2014__1_

It’s Election Day in Arkansas.  Hopefully, you’ve already taken advantage of Early Voting and cast your ballot for the best  Arkansas candidate.  If not, why not hop on over to your polling place and do that right now.  What an important freedom we have to participate in the electoral process.

You may be as tired as I am of all of the campaign ads (which, of course, will be with us through November anyway), the political flyers and events, and the robocalls.  Hubby just told me that I was wasting my time trying to carry  on a conversation  with the robocall guys.  But I figure if they can get all personal asking me how I’m going to vote, then I should return the favor and ask about whether or not they have on clean underwear and all.  My momma would be so proud of me for that.

In addition to voting for your public officials, it’s also time to enter your the Arkansas Times “Best of Arkansas” vote, and I seriously hope you will take a moment from your day to go do that.  The voting ends on June 23.

While you’re there, could you take an extra minute or two to locate the Best Blog category?  Keep moving on through the pages.  I promise it will eventually show up.  Your vote for ArkansasWomenBloggers.com would be lovingly appreciatedSmile.  Or, any of our #ARWB member blogs if you are otherwise inclined.

I promise. (Don’t most politicians do that?) There will NOT be any campaign materials sent to you through the mail.  Nor will you receive yet another robocall.  Actually, I won’t even friendly call you.  Sorry.  You don’t have the time for that, and I probably don’t either.  Retirement does have a way of keeping me busy.

Anyway, it’s probably raining again today so you can’t get outside to lounge around the pool or plant zinnias or marigolds in the garden.  While away your time by filling in at least 10 of the voting categories on the “Best of Arkansas” form (online or in print)…it will at least be an interesting read.

Thanks a bunch.
